U16'S GET OFF TO WINNING START

A keen and enthusiastic Midlands formation proved to be no match for the more experienced Salford side relishing being back in action on their home turf, following the postponement of this fixture from the week before, and Head Coach, Danny Barton, pronounced himself well satisfied with his side’s first outing of the season.

“It took us a little time to settle, but once we did we started to get on top, and by the second half we began to run away with it,” is his assessment.  “We even bombed a few chances by dropping the ball over the line a couple of times.”

As always, there were certain players who stood out in his estimation.  These included, prop, Josh Whitehill, who gamefully played for lengthy spells and performed really well, while the half back pairing of Jamie Abram and Keegan Brennan led the team around the field both purposefully and efficiently.

Among the try scorers was local lad, Ben Moseley, who used his exceptional pace and evasive running to score the try of the match.  An attendee at Walkden High School, Ben has only recently made the change of code from rugby union.  The other tries were scored by Liam Leech (2), Reece Walker, Jamie Abram, Tyler Dupree, and Keenan Fraser, while Keegan Brennan was on target with our goal kicks.  Oscar Stone was crossed for the Midlands, with Josh Jackson kicking the goal.

This coming weekend’s game is an away encounter, against the North East.  They too have had a comfortable win over the Midlands so this should prove to be a much more taxing challenge for the young Red Devils.  With the venue being at none other than the home of the Newcastle Falcons, Danny considers that that large pitch will, in itself, provide something of a new challenge for his charges.

Alongside this, Danny tells me that the former Scholarship, now Embed The Pathway, has expanded to include twelve, thirteen, and fourteen year olds alongside the longstanding fifteen and sixteen year old set up.  He is, consequently very keen to increase the number of those younger players currently involved, and so are contacting all local schools in their endeavours to achieve this.
