Salford revel in Sky Try success.

 

 

The Salford Red Devils have had another fantastic week delivering the Sky Try programme to schools and community clubs around Salford, Manchester, Trafford and Bury.

 

 

Sky Try is an initiative put together to bring 100,000 new people a year into the sport of rugby league, with the support of the Super League clubs, and the Red Devils are at the forefront of the campaign to spread the sports gospel.

In the last week, the Salford Red Devils have hosted 9 a-side festivals for year 7 and 9 boys from schools all over the region, giving the opportunity for hundreds of young players to showcase the considerable talent that exists in Greater Manchester. 

 

 

Many of the schools involved in the festivals have benefited from expertise of the Red Devils Foundations community coaches, and the series of festivals has given the opportunity for the schools to transfer this engagement into a competitive environment. 

 

 

Foundation Director Mark Brocklehurst is delighted by the progress being made by the Sky Try scheme, and by the enthusiasm shown by players involved in the festivals;

 

 

“Sky Try is a fantastic opportunity for us alongside fellow professional clubs to bring the game of rugby league to the people of Greater Manchester, and its been brilliant to see the way in which people have engaged with it, especially with the schools festivals”.

 

 

The schools festivals are attended by the Red Devils community coaches and scouts, in addition we are offering the under 12’s, 13’s and 14’s boys a further opportunity to show off their skills and access professional coaching through the upcoming 'Embed the Pathway' sessions, taking place in the Spring half term break. 

 

 

The ‘Embed the Pathway’ sessions, are the next step into rugby league following the introduction offered by Sky Try and are key to the Salford Red Devils aims to achieve a 75% rate of local players in their academy and scholarship system, which is spearheaded by the under 16’s ‘Rising Stars’ programme. 

 

 

Further to the success seen through the festivals and training being provided by the Red Devils, Sky Try is also bearing fruit at a community level, as Greater Manchester continues to see growth through the success of its local community clubs.

 

 

As Salford continue in their commitment to the initiative, the success doesn’t look to be stopping anytime soon, as the Red Devils prepare for a festival of community rugby league as they bring the ‘Big Games Bigger’ scheme to the match against Leeds Rhinos on the 9th April, which will build on the success of last years event, which saw an extra 1372 people attend the Red Devils easter win over Wigan Warriors.

 

 

‘Big Games Bigger’ aims to give people from the local area their first experience of Super League rugby and boost attendances for the game. With the prospect of this event around the corner, Brocklehurst is excited to see what Sky Try will produce in the future;
