Salford photographer raises money in memory of former player 

Salford Red Devils supporter and Official Club Photographer Steve McCormick has raised over £1000 for the Cardiac Research in the Young (CRY) charity, in memory of former Salford player Leon Walker.

 

Walker who spent 3 years with Salford, died in 2009 whilst playing for Wakefield Trinity Wildcats from a pre-existing heart condition at just 20 years old. 

 

Steve, who has been taking photographs for the club for 3 years has taken on a 10k run after being inspired to start to running by a friend, he explains;

 

“I decided to start running again about a year ago after a friends illness reminded me I was healthy enough to run but was just being idol. Like all of the staff at Salford at the time of Leon’s death, I was moved to do something to honour him.”

 

The Salford Red Devils Foundation have supported Steve in this challenge by donating £200 to his cause, alongside donations from members of the Red Devils squad, academy and supporters;

 

“The support from the Foundation was great, as well as the donations from the current Academy staff and players, which is important to me as obviously Leon had been an Salford Academy player.”

 

The Salford Red Devils Foundation is committed to supporting player welfare as well as working to improve health standards in Salford and the wider area, and Foundation Director Mark Brocklehurst is happy to support Steve in his attempts to raise money for a cause so close to those associated with the club, he said;

 

“We were all shocked and saddened when Leon passed away so suddenly in 2009, so it’s brilliant to see Steve doing something to raise money for CRY and really make a difference in Leon’s memory.”
